Defect: CERTAIN TRANSIT BUSES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 217, "BUS EMERGENCY EXITS AND WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE." DUE TO CERTAIN SEATING ARRANGEMENTS, THE EMERGENCY EXIT RELEASE HANDLES DID NOT FALL IN THE ACCEPTABLE REGION SET FORTH BY THE STANDARD.
Consequence: THE RELEASE MECHANISMS FOR THE REAR WINDOW MARKED AS AN "EMERGENCY EXIT" WERE PARTIALLY BLOCKED SO ACCESS TO THE MECHANISMS WOULD BE PARTIALLY OBSTRUCTED. THERE COULD BE CONFUSION IN LOCATING THE EMERGENCY EXIT RELEASE HANDLES IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
Remedy: THE REAR WINDOW EMERGENCY EXIT STICKERS WILL NEED TO BE REMOVED. OWNERS ARE BEING PROVIDED WITH REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS. OWNER NOTIFICATION IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING NOVEMBER 2002. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE LABELS AND INSTRUCTIONS WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DIAMOND COACH AT 1-800-241-8678, EXTENSION 13.

Notes on this record
Complaints from the API and bulk file are merged and deduplicated by ODI number; the API alone misses records.
System and subsystem counts are numbers of distinct complaints, recalls or communications that name them. One record can name several systems, so shares across systems can add to more than 100 percent; a single share never exceeds 100 percent.
Recalls are counted once per campaign, investigations once per action and manufacturer communications once per NHTSA id, even when NHTSA lists several model names for the same record.
A sales denominator is a calendar-year proxy, not the population of vehicles still in use. Rates are copied from verified pipeline output.
NHTSA's complaints API and bulk file list no complaint for this make, model and model year in this data build.
