Defect: ELGIN SWEEPER IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007 THROUGH 2010 BROOM BEAR STREET SWEEPERS, MOUNTED IN INTERNATIONAL 4300 CHASSIS ONLY, MANUFACTURED FROM MAY 2007 THROUGH MARCH 2010. THE CHASSIS SUSPENSION REAR CONTROL ARMS AND TOWER MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PROPERLY WELDED TO SPECIFICATION.
Consequence: THE WELDS CAN CRACK CAUSING THE CONTROL ARMS OR TOWER TO SEPARATE FROM THE AXLE. SHOULD THIS OCCUR WHILE THE VEHICLE IS MOTION, THE OPERATOR CAN LOOSE STEERING CONTROL POSSIBLY RESULTING IN PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH.
Remedy: ELGIN SWEEPER WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPAIRS WILL BE PERFORMED BY CERTIFIED WELDERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON AUGUST 16, 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ELGIN SERVICE DEPARTMENT AT 1-877-342-5374.
Date: 2008-01-28. Systems: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING.
Defect: ON CERTAIN SWEEPERS EQUIPPED WITH COMPRESSED NATURAL GAS (CNG), SWEEPING DEBRIS MAY BUILD UP IN FRONT OF THE REAR AXLE AND IN THE EXHAUST DISCHARGE PIPE. UNDER HEAVY SWEEPING CONDITIONS, THE CNG EXHAUST TEMPERATURES CAN EXCEED 800 DEGREES.
Consequence: THE EXHAUST TEMPERATURE COULD IGNITE THE DEBRIS. PERSONNEL NEAR THE STREET SWEEPER COULD BE INJURED OR PROPERTY DAMAGE COULD OCCUR.
Remedy: ELGIN WILL INSTALL A NEW EXHAUST SYSTEM IN THESE VEHICLES THAT WILL REDIRECT THE EXHAUST DISCHARGE AWAY FROM THE ELEVATOR SYSTEM AND DEBRIS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 1, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT ELGIN AT 1-877-342-5374.

Notes on this record
Complaints from the API and bulk file are merged and deduplicated by ODI number; the API alone misses records.
System and subsystem counts are numbers of distinct complaints, recalls or communications that name them. One record can name several systems, so shares across systems can add to more than 100 percent; a single share never exceeds 100 percent.
Recalls are counted once per campaign, investigations once per action and manufacturer communications once per NHTSA id, even when NHTSA lists several model names for the same record.
A sales denominator is a calendar-year proxy, not the population of vehicles still in use. Rates are copied from verified pipeline output.
NHTSA's complaints API and bulk file list no complaint for this make, model and model year in this data build.
