Defect: Motor Coach Industries (MCI) is recalling certain 2020-2021 J4500E, 2021 D45CRTELE, 2023 J4500E, 2023-2024 D45CRTELE, 2024 D45CRTE, and 2025 J4500E buses. An inadequate weld on the high voltage battery busbar and incorrect software may cause the battery module to overheat.
Consequence: A battery module that overheats increases the risk of a fire.
Remedy: MCI will inspect and replace the battery module as necessary. MCI will also update the BMS software. Owner notification letters were mailed October 6, 2025. Owners may contact MCI customer service at 1-800-241-2947.

Notes on this record
Complaints from the API and bulk file are merged and deduplicated by ODI number; the API alone misses records.
System and subsystem counts are numbers of distinct complaints, recalls or communications that name them. One record can name several systems, so shares across systems can add to more than 100 percent; a single share never exceeds 100 percent.
Recalls are counted once per campaign, investigations once per action and manufacturer communications once per NHTSA id, even when NHTSA lists several model names for the same record.
A sales denominator is a calendar-year proxy, not the population of vehicles still in use. Rates are copied from verified pipeline output.
NHTSA's complaints API and bulk file list no complaint for this make, model and model year in this data build.
