Defect: Smeal Holding LLC (Smeal) is recalling certain 2013-2017 Aerial and Pumper Fire Apparatus vehicles, equipped with Hale pressure relief valves in the water pumps used for fire fighting. Rings securing the valves may corrode over time after exposure to water, causing the ring to fail and the pressure relief valve to open, reducing the water pressure available for fire fighting.
Consequence: A reduction in water pressure may hinder fire fighting efforts, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy: Smeal will notify owners, and Hale service providers will install a remedy kit, free of charge. The recall began on December 11, 2017. Owners may contact Smeal customer service at 1-800-543-5008 or Hale customer service at 1-800-533-3569. Smeal's number for this recall is 17028.

Notes on this record
Complaints from the API and bulk file are merged and deduplicated by ODI number; the API alone misses records.
System and subsystem counts are numbers of distinct complaints, recalls or communications that name them. One record can name several systems, so shares across systems can add to more than 100 percent; a single share never exceeds 100 percent.
Recalls are counted once per campaign, investigations once per action and manufacturer communications once per NHTSA id, even when NHTSA lists several model names for the same record.
A sales denominator is a calendar-year proxy, not the population of vehicles still in use. Rates are copied from verified pipeline output.
NHTSA's complaints API and bulk file list no complaint for this make, model and model year in this data build.
