Defect: Starcraft Bus is recalling certain model year 2004-2009 XLT buses manufactured from January 16, 2004, to October 29, 2009. The affected vehicles have incorrect values for the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating and Gross Axle Weight Rating specified on the certification label. Thus, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of 49 CFR Part 567, "Certification."
Consequence: A misprinted label could lead to improper vehicle loading. Improper loading could result in a tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy: Starcraft will notify owners, and dealers will remedy the buses by either providing a new certification label, adding additional suspension and upgrading the rear tires, or removing seats. The safety recall began on April 1, 2013. Owners may contact Starcraft Bus at 1-800-348-7440.
Defect: CERTAIN TRANSIT BUSES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 217, "BUS EMERGENCY EXITS AND WINDOW RETENTION AND RELEASE." THE REAR DOOR IS NOT LABELED CORRECTLY TO IDENTIFY THAT IT IS AN EMERGENCY EXIT AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPENING THE DOOR ARE NOT AFFIXED TO THE DOOR.
Consequence: IF THE OPERATION OF THE EMERGENCY EXIT DOOR IS NOT UNDERSTOOD, AN OCCUPANT MAY NOT BE ABLE TO OPEN THE DOOR AND EXIT THE VEHICLE IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND INSTALL AN EMERGENCY EXIT SIGN ABOVE THE REAR DOOR. INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPENING THE DOOR WILL BE MOUNTED NEAR THE HANDLE OF THE DOOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 15, 2005. OWNERS MAY CONTACT STARCRAFT AT 1-800-348-7440.

Notes on this record
Complaints from the API and bulk file are merged and deduplicated by ODI number; the API alone misses records.
System and subsystem counts are numbers of distinct complaints, recalls or communications that name them. One record can name several systems, so shares across systems can add to more than 100 percent; a single share never exceeds 100 percent.
Recalls are counted once per campaign, investigations once per action and manufacturer communications once per NHTSA id, even when NHTSA lists several model names for the same record.
A sales denominator is a calendar-year proxy, not the population of vehicles still in use. Rates are copied from verified pipeline output.
NHTSA's complaints API and bulk file list no complaint for this make, model and model year in this data build.
