2 recalls.

02V004010

Date: 2002-09-20. Systems: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL.

Defect: ON CERTAIN SCHOOL AND TRANSIT BUSES EQUIPPED WITH ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL/ACCELERATOR PEDALS SUPPLIED BY WILLIAMS CONTROLS INDUSTRIES, THE WELD ATTACHING THE CLEVIS TO THE PLATE HAS INSUFFICIENT PENETRATION AND COULD ALLOW THE CLEVIS TO SEPARATE FROM THE PLATE.

Consequence: IF THE CLEVIS SEPARATED FROM THE PLATE WHILE THE VEHICLE WAS IN USE, THE VEHICLE WOULD RETURN TO IDLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Remedy: INTERNATIONAL WILL RETROFIT VEHICLES WITH A NEW PEDAL ROD AND BRACKET. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 16, 2002. OWNERS WHO DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT INTERNATIONAL AT 1-800-448-7825.

Do not drive: No. Park outside: No.

00V148000

Date: 2000-05-23. Systems: STEERING.

Defect: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: SCHOOL/TRANSIT BUSES AND MEDIUM DUTY TRUCKS. THE CASTINGS USED ON THE POWER STEERING PUMPS WERE NOT BUILT TO MATCH THE ENGINEERING DRAWINGS, RESULTING IN A THIN WALL IN THE PUMP CASTING OR A COMPLETE CONNECTION OF TWO PASSAGES THAT ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SEPARATED TO CONTROL FLUID FLOW. THE FLUID FLOW MAY BE REDUCED TO LESS THAN THE MINIMUM REQUIRED FLOW RATE TO PROVIDE FULL PO (excerpt)

Consequence: AN INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE AT SLOW ENGINE SPEEDS CAN RESULT, INCREASING THE POSSIBILITY OF A CRASH. (excerpt)

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND REPLACE ALL PUMPS THAT HAVE THE DEFECTIVE CASTING NUMBERS. (excerpt)

Do not drive: No. Park outside: No.

Notes on this record

  • Complaints from the API and bulk file are merged and deduplicated by ODI number; the API alone misses records.
  • System and subsystem counts are numbers of distinct complaints, recalls or communications that name them. One record can name several systems, so shares across systems can add to more than 100 percent; a single share never exceeds 100 percent.
  • Recalls are counted once per campaign, investigations once per action and manufacturer communications once per NHTSA id, even when NHTSA lists several model names for the same record.
  • A sales denominator is a calendar-year proxy, not the population of vehicles still in use. Rates are copied from verified pipeline output.
  • NHTSA's complaints API and bulk file list no complaint for this make, model and model year in this data build.
