Date: 2002-07-23. Systems: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.

Defect: ON CERTAIN MINI-MOTORHOMES EQUIPPED WITH A KITCHEN SLIDE-OUT, SOME 120-VOLT ELECTRICAL WIRES UNDERNEATH THE KITCHEN SINK ARE ROUTED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT THEY COULD MAKE CONTACT WITH ABRASIVE COMPONENTS, WHILE THE SLIDE-OUT IS BEING OPERATED AND CHAFE THE PROTECTIVE COVERING CREATING A POSSIBLE SHORT CIRCUIT. IN ADDITION, THERE IS AN EDGE ON THE SLIDE-OUT FLOOR THAT COULD COME IN CONTACT WITH 12 (excerpt)

Consequence: IF A SHORT CIRCUIT OCCURS IN EITHER SITUATION, THE CIRCUIT BREAKER WILL TRIP. HOWEVER, IF THE BREAKER FAILS TO TRIP, ARCING FROM THE SHORT CIRCUIT COULD IGNITE ANY COMBUSTIBLE MATERIAL OR ITEMS THAT MAY BE STORED IN THE KITCHEN SINK CABINET AND START A FIRE. (excerpt)

Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, AS NECESSARY, REPLACE ANY DAMAGED WIRING AND ALSO INSTALL A FLEXIBLE CORD AND PLASTIC WIRING CONDUIT TO PROTECT THE 120-VOLT WIRING AGAINST CHAFING. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN AUGUST 7, 2002. Notes on this record

  • Complaints from the API and bulk file are merged and deduplicated by ODI number; the API alone misses records.
  • System and subsystem counts are numbers of distinct complaints, recalls or communications that name them. One record can name several systems, so shares across systems can add to more than 100 percent; a single share never exceeds 100 percent.
  • Recalls are counted once per campaign, investigations once per action and manufacturer communications once per NHTSA id, even when NHTSA lists several model names for the same record.
  • A sales denominator is a calendar-year proxy, not the population of vehicles still in use. Rates are copied from verified pipeline output.
  • NHTSA's complaints API and bulk file list no complaint for this make, model and model year in this data build.
